Polar codes are a group of codes using channel polarization, invented by E. Arikan in 2008 [1], and proved to be capacity achieving. Polar codes make use of the fact that channels can be polarized, such that some channels become very reliable and others completely unreliable. All information gets sent on reliable channels. Channel polarization is a phenomenon that occurs naturally.
